Annual Enrollment Period for 2027
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 coverage runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. During this period, eligible Medicare beneficiaries can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, or return from Medicare Advantage to Original Medicare. Changes generally take effect January 1, 2027, when the plan receives your enrollment request by December 7. Review your current plan’s Annual Notice of Change, doctors, medications, costs, and benefits before deciding. Medicare Supplement enrollment rules are separate.
Medicare Telemarketers and Misrepresentation
Be cautious of claims that everyone qualifies for extra benefits, that a plan has no costs, or that you must change plans immediately. Advertised benefits may depend on your location, eligibility, and the specific plan. Do not agree to an enrollment or plan change just to receive information. Ask for the plan’s name and written details, verify your doctors and prescriptions, and review the effect on your current coverage with a trusted source before authorizing a change. If you suspect misleading marketing or an unwanted enrollment, contact your plan and Medicare through verified official channels.
Be cautious of unsolicited text messages advertising Medicare benefits or asking you to confirm coverage. Do not click links, open attachments, reply, or provide personal information in a suspicious or unexpected message. A message may impersonate Medicare, an insurer, or an agent to steal information or lead you into an unwanted plan change. Verify any offer by contacting your Licensed Agent or by independently contacting the organization through its official website or the contact information on your membership card. Block and report suspicious messages using your phone’s spam-reporting tools.
Many large telemarketing companies use automated dialing systems and call centers that may be located outside your home state. The caller may have little familiarity with your local doctors, hospitals, or available coverage. An out-of-state call does not by itself mean an offer is fraudulent, but verify who is contacting you and speak with a trusted Licensed Agent before agreeing to any plan change. With the advent of modern AI systems, many telemarketing callers can already see which carrier or plan you currently have and may use language leading you to incorrectly assume your own carrier is calling.
Do Not Release Personal Information
Never give your Medicare number, Social Security number, bank or credit card information, passwords, or other personal information to an inbound telemarketing caller. Caller ID can be misleading. If a caller pressures you or claims to represent Medicare, hang up and contact Medicare or your plan using its official website or the contact information on your membership card. Medicare will not call you uninvited to ask for personal information. Do not release personal information to an unsolicited caller claiming to be an official government representative, insurance company, or plan sponsor. A legitimate representative may need information during a follow-up you requested or an enrollment you authorized; independently verify the organization and contact it through an official channel before sharing anything. Share enrollment information only after you independently verify who you are working with and choose to proceed through a secure, authorized process.
